This innovative addition, also known as the &#8220;FAN method&#8221; or &#8220;cluster research&#8221;, is a powerful research tool that provides a unique way to expand family research and discover connections beyond traditional family lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It allows you to document relationships between two people in your file that aren&#8217;t necessarily related. They could be friends, neighbors, or even something like an enslaver \/ enslaved person relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adding an Association<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can add an association in two different places:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>From the Add button on any of the People views<\/li><li>From the Add fact list when editing a person<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.rootsmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rm9_association-add.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"596\" height=\"458\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.rootsmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rm9_association-add.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3689\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.rootsmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rm9_association-add.jpg 596w, http:\/\/blog.rootsmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rm9_association-add-300x231.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When adding (or editing) an association, you can enter the following information:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Association type:<\/strong> The type of association (friends, neighbors, etc.). You can also create your own association types.<\/li><li><strong>The 2 people:<\/strong> You can select the two associated people using the selection list. If the two people are reversed, you can use the &#8220;Switch roles for the 2 people&#8221; button to switch them.<\/li><li><strong>Date:<\/strong> The date (or date range) for the association<\/li><li><strong>Sort date:<\/strong> A non-printing date used to sort the association with other events and associations<\/li><li><strong>Place:<\/strong> The place for the association<\/li><li><strong>Place details:<\/strong> The place details for the association<\/li><li><strong>Description:<\/strong> A short (one line) description for the association<\/li><li><strong>Note:<\/strong> Any text you want to enter describing more details about the association<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When editing from the Edit Person screen, you can also add source citations, media, and even tasks to the association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Association View<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On the main screen, the new Association view is a list of all the associations in your file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.rootsmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rm9_people-associations.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"675\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.rootsmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rm9_people-associations-1024x675.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3690\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.rootsmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rm9_people-associations-1024x675.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/blog.rootsmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rm9_people-associations-300x198.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blog.rootsmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rm9_people-associations-768x506.jpg 768w, http:\/\/blog.rootsmagic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/rm9_people-associations.jpg 1176w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From the association view, you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Sort the list<\/strong>: Click the header of the column to sort by<\/li><li><strong>Filter the list:<\/strong> Type in the name of the person you want to filter by<\/li><li><strong>Edit either person:<\/strong> Click &#8220;Edit person 1&#8221; or &#8220;Edit person 2&#8221;<\/li><li><strong>Edit the association:<\/strong> Click &#8220;Edit relationship&#8221;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Association List<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also a new report called the &#8220;Association List&#8221;. It displays an indented list of the highlighted person&#8217;s associations.
