Ancestry API Update: What RootsMagic Users Need to Do Now

Ancestry has officially completed its transition to a new API—the system RootsMagic uses to communicate with Ancestry trees. As of today, the previous API has been turned off.

This change is designed to improve reliability and performance when uploading and downloading your tree data. However, it also means that older versions of RootsMagic are no longer able to connect to Ancestry.

What This Means for You

If your RootsMagic version is not up to date, you may find that syncing with Ancestry no longer works. To restore access, you’ll need to make sure you’re using a compatible version.

What You Need to Do

If you are using RootsMagic 11:
Good news—the required update (version 11.2.0 or later) is completely free. Simply download and install the latest update to continue syncing with Ancestry.

If you are using RootsMagic 10 or earlier:
You will need to upgrade to RootsMagic 11 to maintain your connection with Ancestry. To help with this transition, we’re offering a limited-time $5 discount on the upgrade.

Don’t Wait

If you rely on syncing your data with Ancestry, we strongly recommend updating or upgrading right away to avoid any interruptions.

If you need help, our support team is ready to assist you every step of the way.

  1. I’m always automatically updated with new versions of roots. Is this different do I need to purchase update?

Reply: Looks like you already have RootsMagic 11. All that is required is to update to 11.2.0. It is a free update for RM11 users.

  3. I have upgraded to RootsMagic 11.2.0.0 (5 May 2026) 64 bit version on an up to date Windows 11 version 25H2

There is a problem with Tree Share which I thought I had resolved but have since found the error still exists.

After various experiments including installing fresh copies of Roots Magic on another fully up to date Windows 11 25H2 computer, also on a Mac Mini with Tahoe 26.3.1 and confirmed that the error occurs on all three computers.

    I have isolated the problem.

If a fact or a citation contains an image – such as a birth certificate, or any other document then tree share will not update that record. Remove any images from the fact or citation and tree share will work as it should and update ancestry.co.uk

The images are just normal jpg files not too lare, I even resized some to make them smaller but this had no effect, if an image was present, the record would not update ancestry.

Reply: We have a printable guide “FAQ: WebHints & TreeShare for Ancestry” that covers what is not uploaded to Ancestry. Media items that are larger than 20 MB are not supported. If you have a media item smaller than that then open a support ticket (support@rootsmagic.com) and share the file with an agent for testing.

  5. did not see a place to update. I have Ver 11 and saw you blog on the new Ancestry tool. On my “home” page it says to update and was sent to “blog Sheet” with no place to update. Please advise.

  6. I have an Ancestry account, but my tree is not public. Will this new upgrade work with a tree, that is not on public.

Reply: Yes, you can keep your Ancestry tree private and work with it inside RootsMagic using TreeShare. It’s only if you are sharing the tree with another user that you need to make sure you share it with Editor permission. It can still be private even then.

  7. I think we should have been notified of this prior to the change. I’m at the end of an Ancestry subscription and a big project, and dealing with the UNEXPECTED switch will be a time-consuming burden!
