Looking Back at 2025, Looking Forward to 2026

As we close out 2025 and prepare to welcome 2026, we want to take a moment to reflect on an incredible year and to thank you, our RootsMagic community, for being part of it.

This year brought meaningful growth, new features, and so many opportunities to connect with fellow family history enthusiasts. Whether you’ve been with us for decades or just discovered RootsMagic this year, we’re grateful you’ve chosen us as your partner in preserving and sharing your family story.

A Year of Connection at RootsTech 2025

In March, we returned to the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City for RootsTech 2025, the world’s largest family history conference. As longtime sponsors of this event, we were thrilled to see so many familiar faces at booth #1203, and to meet many of you for the very first time.

Bruce Buzbee presented a session on RootsMagic 10’s latest features, and the response was wonderful. We also loved watching attendees use the “Relatives at RootsTech” feature to discover unexpected family connections with fellow genealogists. There’s something truly special about gathering with thousands of people who share the same passion for uncovering the past.

If you joined us in person or online, thank you for making RootsTech 2025 so memorable.

Honoring Those Who Came Before

Leading up to Memorial Day, we published a special three-part blog series exploring how RootsMagic can help you prepare for cemetery visits and honor your ancestors. Renee Zamora walked us through her personal project on researching family cemeteries, demonstrating how to use saved searches to find ancestors buried in specific locations, how to identify individuals with memorial markers in multiple cemeteries, and how to organize your research using groups, color-coding, and reference numbers.

These articles resonated with many of you. As Renee beautifully put it, the people resting in those cemeteries are more than data; they’re family. Their stories shape our stories, and we’re honored to help you preserve and share those connections.

Introducing RootsMagic 11

September brought our biggest news of the year: the release of RootsMagic 11.

This wasn’t just another update; it was a labor of love shaped by your feedback. We listened carefully to your requests, and RootsMagic 11 reflects what you told us mattered most: a clearer interface, better editing tools, and smarter ways to work with your research.

Here are just a few highlights:

A more comfortable workspace. Views like Pedigree and Family are now clearly labeled, and cryptic icons have been replaced with intuitive menus. The new side panel header shows key information about a person at a glance—names, vital events, relationships, and quick indicators for notes, sources, media, and DNA.

The Life Summary panel. Sometimes you just want to see someone’s whole story in one place. The Life Summary gives you exactly that—a complete snapshot of life events, spouses and children, parents and siblings—all in one view. You can expand, collapse, add relatives, or rearrange with simple drag-and-drop.

Better editing across the board. The new Sources view displays all citations for a person on a single screen, so you don’t have to hunt through multiple windows. Notes and tasks work the same way, with clear indicators showing where information already exists.

Powerful new search tools. The redesigned Advanced Search lets you combine rules with AND, OR, and BUT NOT logic, search by multiple event fields, and find people without sources or those not yet linked into your tree.

The AI Prompt Builder. A first in genealogy software, this tool helps you create clear, structured prompts for your preferred AI assistant. Whether you want to draft a life sketch, write an obituary, or explore historical context, the AI Prompt Builder pulls the details you need from your database while giving you control over the output.

The response from our community has been heartwarming. We’ve heard from many of you that these improvements have made your research more enjoyable and efficient. That feedback means everything to us.

A Fresh Look for RootsMagic.com

Just in time for the launch of RootsMagic 11, we also refreshed our website with a cleaner, more streamlined design. Our goal was simple: make it easier for you to find what you need, whether you’re learning about our products, accessing support, or downloading updates.

New Life Summary in RootsMagic 11

One of the goals behind RootsMagic 11 was to make working with your data feel more natural — less jumping between screens, less hunting for information, and more time actually understanding the people in your tree. The new Life Summary feature is a big step in that direction.

In the short video below, we introduce the Life Summary and show how it brings together a person’s details and immediate family into a single, flexible view.

Watch the Life Summary Video

Seeing the Whole Person at Once

The Life Summary is designed to give you a clear, at-a-glance understanding of a person’s life. Instead of opening multiple edit screens or switching between views, you can now see the most important information about a person — and their closest family relationships — all in one place.

You’ll first notice the Life Summary in the People View, where it appears as a tab in the side panel. Select a person, click the Life Summary tab, and their information is immediately laid out in a clean, readable format.

The panel is divided into three main areas: the person’s details, their spouses and children, and their parents and siblings. Together, these sections tell a compact but surprisingly complete story of how someone fits into their family.

Flexible Sections That Work the Way You Do

Each section of the Life Summary can be expanded or collapsed, and RootsMagic remembers your preferences. If you like keeping family relationships visible while hiding detailed events, you can do that — and it will stay that way as you move from person to person, even after closing and reopening the program.

This makes it easy to scan your tree for patterns. You can quickly spot multiple marriages, blended families, or multiple parent sets without digging through separate screens. When you want more detail, just expand the section and everything is right there.

Editing Family Relationships Without Leaving the Panel

One of the most powerful aspects of the Life Summary is that it isn’t just a display — it’s interactive.

From within the spouses and children section, you can add a new child to the correct family, rearrange children into the proper order, sort them by birth date, or add and reorder spouses. The same kind of functionality is available in the parents and siblings section, including adding siblings or even adding another set of parents.

Any changes you make here are applied throughout RootsMagic. You’re not editing a special view — you’re editing your actual data, just in a more intuitive place.

Quick Actions for Every Relative

Every person shown in the Life Summary includes a small 3-dot menu with several useful actions. You can jump directly to that person, open their edit screen, unlink them from the specific relationship being shown, or delete them entirely.

These options are context-aware, so when you choose to unlink someone, RootsMagic already knows which relationship you’re looking at and acts accordingly. It’s a small detail, but one that makes everyday editing faster and safer.

Easy Navigation While Exploring Families

As you move through relatives using the Life Summary, RootsMagic keeps track of where you’ve been. The Back < and Forward > history buttons (in the upper right of the people views) let you retrace your steps instantly, making it easy to explore a family and then return to your starting point without losing your place.

This works especially well when you’re reviewing siblings, spouses, or parents and just want to take a quick look at someone before jumping back.

A Major Upgrade to Search Results

The Life Summary also appears in search results (both basic and advanced), which dramatically improves how searches work. When you select a person from the results their Life Summary is shown alongside the results list.

That means you can review details, see family connections, and even make edits directly from the search screen — without opening and closing individual people just to confirm you’ve found the right one.

A Better Way to Work with Your Tree

The Life Summary brings clarity, speed, and context to some of the most common tasks in genealogy. By keeping a person’s life and family connections together in one place, it reduces friction and makes RootsMagic feel more connected to the way genealogists actually think.

Once you start using it, the Life Summary quickly becomes one of those features you rely on every day — whether you’re reviewing research, cleaning up relationships, or simply exploring your family history.
