Note: This post has been updated to include updates in version 4.1.2.1.
This minor update mainly fixes issues with RootsMagic freezing when trying to access New FamilySearch. We would like to thank everyone for their patience the last couple of months as we worked to figure out what has changed with New FamilySearch to cause the frequent freezing and error messages some users were experiencing when accessing NFS through RootsMagic. We discovered a number of behavior changes in the NFS API (such as API calls not being responded to in certain situations) which could cause RootsMagic to have to wait for NFS to return before it could continue (sometimes for 5-10 minutes or more).
If you have the RootsMagic News screen come up when you start RootsMagic, it may have already notified you of this update. If not, you can do “Help > Check for Updates” from the RootsMagic menu to download and install this update.
You can also download the update from http://www.rootsmagic.com/updates/rootsmagic
Changes in 4.1.2.1
- When doing Add > Parents, RootsMagic now adds the newly added parents to the side list
- The place list is now updated when deleting an unused place from the unused place list
- FamilySearch.org search works in WebSearch again
- NFS passwords can have + and & characters now
- NFS import would sometimes not import descendants correctly
- Seal to spouse would sometimes print wrong when “Print basic events even if blank” is selected
- Removed “Use secondary access method” option
If this works I will be soooo happy. I love RootsMagic, but was so frustrated. I believe it was NFS that caused the trouble. I work in the local FHC in Kaysville and NFC keeps changing things all the time. Some are good and some are ??? But we keep trying and ‘it will work out.’

Thank you thank you thank you. It has been unbelievably frustrating trying to connect with NFS in the past few months. I’ve tried syncing a few after the update, and it’s worked beautifully. You’ve saved me from pulling out the rest of my hair in frustration.
Thnak you for answering when I contacted support on this problem. That helped and this update seems to correct the freezing. I am at the St. George FHC and we had flustrations and no one knew what was going on. Was there a notice posted any place that could have given everyone wondering whas it my computer – something I did – or nfs? That would have helped us get through the freezing? When we found out what was going on we knew you’d get it fixed, we just had to be patient. I love RootsMagic!
I have been going crazy with my computer freezing up and having to do a control ALT Delete just to get out to the program. I am hoping that this solves the problem – Frustrated in Arizona.
Thank you so much for fixing that problem. Just knowing what caused it set my mind at ease, and making the little adjustment helped too. Since I have a lot of synching to do, I was getting frazzled. Makes me feel better when I know it is not something I did. So, thank you again. And keep us informed, that is worth a lot.
Thanks for solving that problem. I’d actually taken a bit of a vacation from family history because it was becoming so frustrating. Hope I can get back to work (play) now and accomplish something

Thank you for looking into this and working so hard to fix it. I am looking forward to doing some more family submissions now that it is fixed. Thank you for all you do there at RootsMagic – you surely do bless our lives and help us do the work for our ancestors.
I have to add my thanks here too. Hardly a day goes by that I’m not working on family history data and this issues has slowed me down. I just installed the update and I’m zipping right along again!
Thank you for fixing this. I wasn’t sure what was causing the freezing. I am grateful to have it solved.
Thank you, it is working wonderful.
I will be so grateful if this new update will work. I work 6 hours a day in Rootsmagic and love the program . keep up the good work. don’t give up.
I will put on my winter under ware when it freezes up the next time. Ha Ha !!!
Hello Roots, I have more than 80,00 and I want to buy this and the historian also. I go back to before roots and I am now retired and want to write a good book and post you as the reason I was able to do it.
We love you very much!
