We have just released a new update to RootsMagic 4 (version 4.0.3.0). If you have the RootsMagic News screen come up when you start RootsMagic, it may have already notified you of this update. If not, you can do “Help > Check for Updates” from the RootsMagic menu to download and install this update.
You can also download the update from http://www.rootsmagic.com/download.
This is primarily a bug fix update and includes a couple which required some major internal code changes. If you have reported a bug that isn’t addressed by this update, don’t worry… all reported bugs have been logged and are being worked on.
On a somewhat unrelated note… we have had a lot of questions about if and when the RM4 book will be available. The “if” is yes, and the “when” is I’m not sure. Because of the large number of changes / additions in version 4, the book is taking me longer to put together than with past versions (especially with the amount of time I’m spending programming at the moment). I just wanted to assure you I am working on it with all that spare time I have laying around<g>. But the plan is to get it out in the next couple of months. We are also working on some free video tutorials which you will be able to watch online from our website or download to your computer. Keep an eye on the blog and our RootsMagic Newsletter for more information about those in the coming months.
Here are the new, fixed, and updated items in this update:

You say you just released a new update o RootsMagic 4 (version 4.0.3.0)..but when I go to the download page, it says the version # 4.0.2.1.
Ralph, the easiest way to update is to do Help > Check for updates from the RM4 menu. The link on that download page you went to always points to the latest version, but sometimes it takes us a little while to go update that text with the version number.
The amount of work you are doing is outstanding. The quality and stability of the application is better than many products that bigger companies with project teams put out. Keep up the great work. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.
It’s great to see progress being made on the bug list. How far through on a % basis do you think you are now?
Thanks
Grat stuff. Keep up the great work.
Hooray for the new feature to copy the media info when you memorize a citation!
Now for perfection, Fan charts would eliminate the need for any other genealogy software – a dream come true.
Just simply the BEST
Carry on the good work.
Bruce, Thank you so much! RM really is the best out there on the market. It is far superior over the other program options. Your support team is very timely and helpful and you really do a wonderful job!
Allow Us To Print From All Screens.
Please allow us to print from all RootsMagic screens, especially the Relationship Calculator — as we could in previous versions.
Thanks.

When I first changed from another well known software package I was unsure but I’m glad to say I soon found this package very good, easy to use and it’s so good to have regular updates. I did email you once for some advice and its great to have someone there who is prepared to answer you. So many packages just want the sale but don’t want to offer any help thereafter. GREAT – keep up the good work.
I ordered Rootsmagic 4.03 and can’t wait to get it. I used the trial Version and am tickelt with it. I also like it to because I can use PAF 5 to work with and load it over to Rootsmagic. It is a real progres you made with this Program.. Thank you for this great tool. God bless you for it..
Spence, if an image would suffice, you might try ALT+Prnt Scrn to copy the active window and CTRL+V to paste it into Word, Paint, etc.
Dear Bruce,
Please don’t rush the RM4 book! I already have the RM3 and would prefer you take your time in the writing and verifying of the information.
Larry Rudy
I can’t say much that I’ve not said before, but I’m now using my TWELFTH version of FO or RM simply because it continues to get better. This is why RM is the ONLY software I own that I always buy the new version as soon as it comes out, and likely always will. Thanks, Bruce. 🙂
Very satisfied with your program and am waiting for the Version 4 manual.

Please include the date on each listing for “RootsMagic News” so I know when these things came up. If they are dated, then I know it’s a new update, for example, not an old one I’ve alreaded uploaded. It would save time and trouble for everyone I think.
By the way, I do love being able to search for women by maiden and/or married name. On my old program, it used to be tedious to find someone whose maiden name was unknown to me.
I was reluctant to upgrade when I learned that RM3 could not directly read RM4 databases (downgrade impossible) – because of different formats. But after using RM4 for two months now, I’m impressed. I absolutely loved RM3 and had very few complaints. But RM4 has definitely raised the bar. I only wish there was a tighter integration with Ancestry.com – by no means a ding against RM – just a wish (the software that is integrated with Ancestry.com is only fair at best. RootsMagic is at least two full generations ahead of its competition, imho. Congrats to the coding team.
RM4 is truly a well-done software package. As a system designer, programming manager, etc. for many years, as well as a webmaster, author and genealogy researcher, I can honestly say you have done excellent work!
I started my genealogy record keeping with Brothers Keeper many years ago, then went to Family Tree Maker, then Family Origins and finally to Roots Magic. I now use only Roots Magic which I think is the best, most reliable and easiest to use. I have recommended Roots Magic to people that attended the genealogy classes that I taught, it’s the best for the money. Keep up the good work.
It will be good to learn a new program that works well with the New Family Search. Right now I am learning how to run another program like this one, to do my genealogy with. I hope I can learn this one better than I am with the one I am now learning, Legacy.
I love RootMagic. Bruce and the team, they are the bomb. Thanks for all your hard work.. I’ve been on board since the first version of Family Origins and the ups and downs of all that
As you may see I’m getting older now and my eyes are getting weaker. Could we have stronger (darker) lines in the children’s field of the Family tab.
Why did you not set up a source wizard for the Scottish census records as you did for the Welsh one?
Perhaps you already have this feature and I just haven’t figured it out yet but I would like an automatic search for duplicate records. So far the records I have merged were right next to each other but I know that I have at least a couple that aren’t and I don’t know an easy way to find the duplicated people. PAF and Ancestral Quest both have this feature. If RM4 already has this, please tell me how to use it. I have just begun using RM last month so I am still learning.
Are you ever going to have RootsMagic enabled to work with a word processor like Word? Sometimes I want to copy blocks of information to discuss with relatives, but can only copy/paste within program restraints; not helpful.
Deb, do Tools > Merge > Duplicate search merge from the RootsMagic menu.
Question, How do you input new data?
Al, click on “Add” on the menu or toolbar, and you can add an unlinked person, spouse, parents, or child. There is a tutorial on the CD which covers how to get started. If you did the download, you can go to:
http://rootsmagic.com/tutorials/rm/
and click the link there to view the tutorial.
this is so easy to use,the old program was good but this FANTASTIC.Not found any problems yet
I am so excited about Roots Magic
I have a database of 12,000 names that I typed in PAF from my grandma in 1956, but haven’t known how or where to go from there. I have been trying to clean up and verify. Now I can with confidence that I am doing it right. I am a Ward Family History Consultant that really hasn’t known how to help the people in my ward. Thank you Roots Magic.
