With a new year comes a new release. We are excited to present the RootsMagic 8 Community Preview!

Now, you may be asking yourself- “What is a community preview?”

Basically, it is pre-release software. RootsMagic 8 has already been through extensive development and testing, but there is still some “spit n’ polish” before we are ready to officially release it. The Community Preview is a chance for us to get feedback from a larger group of testers and a chance for you to get acquainted with the software early.

As we are expecting a lot of feedback as we open the floodgates, we respectfully ask that you please do not contact our technical support regarding the preview. Our technicians are still becoming acquainted with the software themselves and are unable to offer any help with it until it is officially released.

In the meantime, we’ve set up a new special Facebook group just for users to discuss the preview with others. We’ve also made a special feedback form to send in any errors, bugs, or suggestions.

Do you still have questions? Check out our Frequently-asked questions for important answers to common questions.

  1. What better way to start 2021 with a Root8 Preview!?
Just going through the registration and installation; so far everything went smoothly and the next step is to import a key Tree from Ancestry.

  2. I had three program crashes in less than 10 minutes, sent my feedback. One while searching people, the other two while adding parents.

Reply: Thank you for sending in your feedback. This helps us find issues and fix them.

  3. It is truly wonderful to see RM8 natively on the Mac as well as on the PC in 64-bit glory. I’m delighted that my suggestion was accepted and so quickly implemented in the most recent round of beta-testing. I give you a deeply heart-felt Thank you. Prayers are answered.

  4. I was finally able to download and start up Roots Magic 8. I am having problems with the App freezing up. On the other hand, when I try to connect via the Internet to some website like Family Search, the connection will often be dropped after a brief connection. I like the features that I have viewed and am excited by the features that are mentioned in you YouTube videos. I am sure that these glitches will be worked out.

Reply: Make sure to report issues like this in our feedback form. That will help us find issues and fix them.

  5. I am excited to be part of the RM8 Community, especially since I have been using RM since its inception. Thank you so much for the invitation. I hope I can be of help.

  6. Good idea, great timing.
Please re think the use of Facebook. Maybe the timing is right to start a new secure forum for RM8.

  7. Just getting used to it,so far so good no problems, inputed my tree from 7 with 22000 plus people in it all working well.
I would like to change the colour for the main page but I not found a way yet, I will keep playing.

  8. Hi there, well I have installed RM8 7.9.101 on a freshly cleaned laptop running W7 ultimate. the install of RM8 went fairly straight forward with a couple of small hiccups, which I think was my fault. we see how it performs in the morning after I get some sleep…which always helps the operator to perform better than at 3am in the morning 🙂

  9. Will the new RootsMagic8 have side by side comparison features? Like the person in my tree vs the person in FS? Or Anc?
Also, I have RootsMagic7, but my father in law used Legacy before he passed away. Will I be able to move his Legacy tree into RM8? I am concerned as he has a huge database, and I am the only one in the family that does research, etc.

    Reply: Yes to both.

  10. I’m greatly enjoying the preview, despite some rough edges. However, I refuse to use Facebook. I join with Dave in suggesting a different private alternative.

  11. Just started using the preview and it looks pretty good. I agree with the reservations about Facebook, I have no intention of creating an account there. Happy to use the reporting form in the meantime.
