RootsMagic 4 Unwrapped – “The Book”

One of our users (thanks Herb) wanted to share the information about RootsMagic 4 with his genealogy society, so he compiled all my “unwrapped” blog articles into an easy to follow PDF file.  It covers the sneak previews of RootsMagic 4 from beginning to end making it much easier to follow than tracking backwards through the blog.

If you want a copy of this PDF file to share with others, click here to download a copy.  It’s about a 6MB file (because of all the screenshots).  If the file just opens in your browser, you can just click the save option in the browser’s PDF viewer to save the file.  Or you can right click on the “click here” link above and choose the option to save the target and then save the file.

Oh, and if you were expecting this to be about “Getting the Most Out of RootsMagic” based on the title of this article… there *will* be an updated version of that book, although it probably will ship a month or two after the release of the actual program (there just aren’t enough hours in the day for me to do both the software and book simultaneously).

  1. What a good idea!

Looking forward to the release of version 4, especially with the 1911 census now being available.

  2. This is great! I was wondering how I would organize all the RM4 blogs for my RM3 class that I will be teaching on Jan 22nd.
Now, I don’t have to worry thanks to Herb!
    Thank you very much.

  3. Hey Bruce, I know it’s not the place for a wish but one just occured to me so I went reading the blog way back on July 17 and the Add New Person blog where you said :-

“You will now be able to create your own custom “Add person” form by selecting the fact types you want displayed on that form. Choose which fact types and what order you want them displayed. Once you are happy with your selections, click OK and RootsMagic will return to your newly customized “Add Person” form”

Driving along in the car I got to thinking how cool it would be to have the ability to save these custom “add person” forms, then users could create their own for loads of formatted record sets like the 1911 census where you could create the input screen to mirror the data available and save the format for use again in the future. It would almost be like RM prompting the user for the information and would encourage users to record all facts available.

    Guess I’m too late for V4 though….

  4. This is great. For some reason the screen pics I opened up with blogs were pretty fuzzy and it was hard to see them well (the cost of getting older and eye sight starting to dwindle, I guess). The pdf book makes it very easy fro me to see the screen shots. Thank you mystery writer. Much appreciated!! 🙂

Bruce, I may have missed it, but are there any enhancements being made to the IGI search in RM3? Will that be included in RM4 for those, who, for one reason or other, do not use NFS?

  5. Bruce will the Getting the Most Out Of RootsMagic4 be available at the NGS Conference in Raleigh NC in May?

  6. I am just beginning to work with the new Roots Magic 4. It has transferred my information from my RM3 program but I cannot get it to print the preparer’s information on the reports?? I have checked all of the preparer’s boxes in the report setups. How do I get it to do this?

  7. Just installed and love the new look. Still a little confused over photos. I thought a media folder was no longer needed. When I tried to import a photo from a file, I just got an icon, not the photo.

  8. Marlene, make sure you have entered the preparer’s information (Tools > Database Options > Preparer) and it will print when you mark that checkbox.

  9. I am excited to use Roots Magic 4. The program is very user-friendly. It has so many features that RM 3 did not have that I will be working with this for a while. The program is written very well. I love it!! I am glad I kept looking on the website to see what was new. It is worth every penny!!!

  10. I’ve used RootsMagic for years. This update is STUNNING. I just upgraded and installed. It is fast and beautiful and sensible. I’m anxious to learn more of the details. THANKS.

  11. Trying to understand what a user friendly Genealogy software has and I am getting the message that RootsMagic is far better then any other on the market today, si I am looking forward to getting a copy shortly.

How can I buy an instruction book for Rootsmagic that I just purchased. I do not understand how to use the program efficiently.
